Cornwall Park
Cornwall Park is one of the best picnic spots in Auckland. Springtime is the perfect time to visit. You will find the trees covered in blossom and lambs leaping about the paddocks. This park offers plenty of space (and free parking) to set you up for the day and has picnic tables and toilets around. There are also gas BBQs nearby to cook up a family feast.
Auckland Domain
This vast central park is a wonderful place for eating alfresco. There is so much space that you can easily spread out a blanket or two and enjoy some cheese and crackers. While you are there, make sure to visit the Auckland War Memorial Museum to round out the afternoon or explore the nearby Wintergarden.
Long Bay Regional Park
Without a doubt, Long Bay lives up to its reputation. With a kilometre-long sandy beach, a marine reserve, green hills, and flat grassy areas with large trees for shade, it is a fantastic location for a picnic. There is plenty of space to play with a ball, fly a kite, or just unwind in the sunshine. There are free barbecues scattered throughout the park, toilets, and free parking. The perfect family friendly picnic spot!
Takaparawhau Bastion Point
Make sure to take a detour to Takaparawhau Bastion Point on your way to Mission Bay as this area has rich local history. This is such a gorgeous spot home to the restful Michael Joseph Savage Memorial Gardens overlooking Waitematā Harbour and is a picturesque place for a romantic picnic lunch or dinner. Above the memorial is Takaparawhau / Bastion Point and the marae of Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei. On the east side of the park walk down the stairs and head to Mission Bay to end your day with a delicious ice cream.
Dove Myer Robinson Park (Parnell Rose Gardens)
Take in the views of Judges Bay and the harbour at Dove Myer Robinson Park. The park has accessible restrooms, locker rooms, a parking lot, picnic tables, seats, drinking fountains, and barbecues. There is also plenty of grass area for a picnic. After, make sure to go for a dip in the bay or head to the Parnell pools (open in summer only)..
Coyle Park
Wondering where to go for a picnic with your special someone? Head to Coyle Park in Point Chevalier. There are plenty of grassy open spaces where you can enjoy a beautiful view of Auckland as the sun sets from this location. Plus, there are several paths to go down to the beach for a little dip and if you are travelling with young children, there is also a playground nearby.
Point Erin Park
Point Erin Park is a fantastic location for an Auckland picnic because it is family-friendly, and the park has a fantastic playground and a bike path for children. There are several places to spread out a picnic blanket on the four hectares of grass. Alternatively, there are picnic tables. The park has the best views of the harbour, hands down!
Karekare Beach and falls
Karekare is a wild surf beach with black sand and a popular destination located in the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park. There are plenty of good spots to choose for a picnic there, many of which are shaded. Enjoy a walk along the beach, and be sure to take a short detour up the hill to the enchanted Karekare Falls. Parking can be a bit tricky on peak days, so make sure to arrive early!
Western Springs Park
This is a large and popular central park with a lake in the middle. Enjoy a walk around the park or lake or find a spot for a picnic. There are plenty of restrooms, parking spots, picnic tables and seating. Plus, the park is really close to Auckland Zoo and MOTAT—the perfect place for a day out with the kids.
Victoria Park
From a playground for younger children to a skate park and basketball court for the older but young at heart, there are plenty of spaces to enjoy with the whole family. There are numerous quiet spots for a picnic, the park is also adjacent to a collection of shops and bars that make up Victoria Market, in case you have forgotten something in your picnic hamper.
