Hire a bike and cycle along this popular seaside promenade. From the edge of the city you can follow the bike lane on the footpath for around 8km to Saint Heliers Beach, without crossing any roads. Along the way, enjoy the stunning sea views and stop offs at picturesque bays and beaches.
Hire or bring your own mountain bike and speed through the pine forest on purpose-built tracks and jumps, ranging from beginner to advanced. Spread over 12,500 hectares of land, this sheltered, sand-based forest is one of Auckland’s largest adventure destinations.
Beginning at Omana Regional Park, this spectacular route – up to 18km long – takes you along beaches and through forest between Maraetai and Beachlands. With different options at points along the route, you can change your ride to suit any level of ability. Make a day of it with an afternoon barbecue at the park afterwards.
The biking tracks in this beautiful regional park, just 40 minutes' drive south of the city, will take you through lush forest and rolling farmland, past waterfalls and great swimming spots. The trails range from easy to advanced grades and you can even polish up in the park’s dedicated skills area first.
Cycling is a great way to experience the beauty of Waiheke. Bring your own bike to discover the island’s native bush, golden beaches and many vineyards if you fancy a wine tasting along the way. You can also take a guided cycle tour and enjoy lunch afterwards at a lively local café or restaurant.
From downtown Auckland, it’s just a 12-minute ferry ride to the picturesque seaside town of Devonport. Take the mostly-paved cycle track through paths, boardwalks and bridges to Takapuna; there are great cafés, shopping and beaches at both ends to explore too.
For a short, easy cycle, explore the central city waterfront by bike, then travel past the Viaduct Harbour and Wynyard Quarter precincts and along the newly developed boardwalk that runs along the edge of Westhaven Marina.
For something a little longer, try the Matakana Cycle Trail from Matakana to Omaha and Point Wells. This ride is a mostly gravel road and travels through bush and farmland, passing lakes, wineries and road stalls on the way.
Follow a winding shared path along Henderson Creek for an easy 8km ride through parklands in Auckland’s west.
Take the family out for a ride along the shore from Prince Regent Drive in Farm Cove to the Panmure Bridge. This 18km route is fully paved, flat and entirely off the road – and regular signposting not only keeps you on track, but also explains the area’s historic and environmental features too.
If you’re new to cycling, or are riding with children, this cycleway and walkway is just for you. The path offers a variety of environments, from beach and estuary to park and bush trails, and is perfect for spotting birds.
