Kawau Island

Cruise through crystal-clear waters and discover a slice of 19th century history.

Kawau Island is one of the larger islands in the Hauraki Gulf, but it’s also a quiet haven – in fact it has no roads.

In 1862, Kawau was bought as a private residence by politician Sir George Grey. Walk through his fully restored historical Mansion House and see the artefacts collected during his extensive travels. In the surrounding tropical gardens, you’ll see wallabies and peacocks; Grey introduced the exotic plants and animals to the island, which gives it a distinctly different feel from other Hauraki Gulf islands.

Afterwards, take the round-trip Miners Track from the wharf and along the foreshore to the old copper mine.

Water lovers, join a cruise to explore the island’s beautiful bays, see historical landmarks and learn about the island’s history (and keep an eye out for dolphins). Charter a boat and anchor at one of the calm bays for a spot of fishing – the calm, clear waters are great for catching snapper, kingfish, kahawai and John Dory.
