Silverdale, Orewa and Waiwera
On your way north, stop off at one of the new cafés in Silverdale, before you explore the beautiful Hibiscus Coast. Despite its sunny location, you can actually ski year-round at Snowplanet, an indoor ski resort with slopes for seasoned snow bunnies and beginners, plus tobogganing, snowboarding and tubing.
Orewa is the gateway to the Hibiscus Coast. The long stretch of beach is perfect for swimming, kayaking, parasailing, kitesurfing, windsurfing, boating and fishing. Afterwards, hit the shops to pick up Kiwiana arts and gifts or kick back at one of the numerous cafés and restaurants – many with a view. Or visit nearby Wenderholm, one of Auckland’s most popular regional parks.
Whangaparaoa Peninsula
If you head east from Silverdale instead of continuing north, you’ll find this picture-perfect slice of land, ringed by sheltered sandy beaches. Which means plenty of water activities – swimming, fishing, kayaking, boating, stand up paddle boarding; you name it.
Explore the walking tracks at beautiful Shakespear Regional Park at the tip of the peninsula for stunning scenery and views over the Hauraki Gulf. Book one of the barbecues and make a day of it with the family.
If you’d rather do your walking on a golf course, play a round at the world-class golf course at Gulf Harbour Country Club, with more expansive sea views. Relax in the stylish country club after your final putt.
Orewa is patrolled during summer only. Stay safe and always swim between the flags. Other beaches in this region are not patrolled; find patrolled beaches and information on water safety here.
